Restaurant review: The Bull Steak Expert is an understated temple serving some of the finest steak in London.

He’s downsized into this tiny, black and red dining room, an understated temple to what issues from his custom-made grill.

There are Continental-sounding dishes on the menu: truffled gnocchi; that newly fashionable pork cut, secreto Ibérico; beef Milanese.

But we’re here for the steaks.

After some meaty, marinated aubergine, and a couple of the best empanadas I’ve had in this country – short, crisp pastry stuffed with beef or cheese and sweetcorn – we try a thick-cut angosto (sirloin), perfectly seared, rested and seasoned.

You’ll pay £8 just for a couple of empanadas.

But this is a man (a former consultant to Gaucho) who has his own signature steak cuts.

The sense of an old master playing by his own rules is evident also in his left-field parrillada, which brings lamb to the steak-chorizo-morcilla party, plus corn on the cob, humitas and salad.

Medallón de lomo may have looked pale and uninteresting, bereft of any deep brown caramelising, yet this steak gave near-giddying flavour.

asked a waitress of one couple.
